Current Study Topics

Annually, the Janesville League of Women Voters selects topics of interest to focus on during the program year. Following are the areas of interest for 2015-2016.

Wellness: Focus on Mental Health

Looking at resources available to Mental Health and Wellness issues, including drug and alcohol abuse and mental illness treatment in the city of Janesville and Rock County. Taking a bigger picture look at what mental health treatment looks like and societal views of mental health.

The Wellness Committee organized three public forums to provide information on the various topics explored.

Forum 1: Mental Health Services in Rock County

Forum 2: The Family and Clinical Side of Mental Health

Forum 3: Law Enforcement and Judicial System Relations with the Mentally Ill

At the May 2017 LWV-Janesville Annual Meeting the following position statement on behavioral health was approved: Behavioral Health Position Statement

Redistricting

The state Legislative Committee will be suggesting an update of the current state position. This will mostly involve updating and clarifying the language. The proposed revision will go to the State Board for consideration and then to local Leagues in the Annual Meeting packet.

Local Positions

The study of a topic of interest generally leads to an agreement by the membership of actions that local government should take. The process of reaching this agreement is called consensus and results in a position statement. When needed, the position is used to provide the basis for advocating a certain action by a governmental body.

Positions are reviewed at each annual meeting and can be approved or revised.

County-wide Positions

When studying an issue that has county-wide concern, the League of Women Voters of Janesville cooperates with the League of Women Voters of Beloit. In that way, both leagues address an issue with one voice.

The issues studied and consensus reached on a county-wide issue include the following.
